Chapter 7 - The Cavalry Arrives

"FBI! Federal Law Enforcement! Drop your weapons and put your hands on your head where we can see them!"
The voice boomed through the house with authority, shaking the glass in the windows.
The two intruders panicked instantly. The lead man swung his gun toward the window, but before he could pull the trigger, a thunderous crash echoed from the hallway. Heavy flashbang grenades sailed through the shattered doorway, hitting the floor with metallic clatters.
"Get down! Cover your ears!" David shouted, throwing himself over Lily and me just as the flashbangs detonated with blinding white explosions and deafening concussive roars.
The room filled with thick, disorienting smoke and the smell of sulfur. Shouts, heavy boots pounding on hardwood floors, and metallic clangs echoed from the hallway.
"Clear! Room clear!" a voice shouted from the doorway.
Within seconds, tactical officers in full gear swarmed into the room. The two intruders didn't even attempt to fight back against overwhelming force; they were slammed to the floor, disarmed, and cuffed within seconds.
"Agent Vance, Internal Affairs," a sharp, professional voice called out as a tall woman in a dark suit walked through the ruined doorway, flashing an official badge. She looked down at David, who was helping me and Lily up from the floor. "Mr. Miller? Are you and your family alright?"
"We're... we're safe," David breathed, pulling us close into a protective embrace. "You got here just in time."
Agent Vance nodded, looking around the room at the stacks of boxes and the ruined door. "We've been tracking this cell for six months, Mr. Miller. Your decision to isolate the assets here and leave an encrypted trail for our secure division was risky, but it gave us the exact jurisdiction we needed to raid their entire network tonight."
I looked at David, the anger and fear finally melting away, replaced by profound relief and lingering shock. He had risked everything to protect us, operating in absolute secrecy because he couldn't trust anyone else.

"You're an idiot for not telling me sooner," I whispered, tears streaming down my face as I rested my head against his shoulder.
David smiled softly, kissing the top of my head. "I know. I'm sorry. But it's over now."
