Chapter 5 - The Intruder at the Door

The sound was unmistakable: the distinct metallic click of our front door latch turning, followed by the soft creak of the heavy oak door swinging open.

David froze, his eyes snapping toward the bedroom door. Lily gasped, letting out a sharp, frightened squeak that she instantly tried to muffle with her hands.

"They're here," David whispered, the color draining entirely from his face. He scrambled to his feet, pushing the heavy oak cabinet further across the floor to block the bedroom entrance, though it was a flimsy barrier against determined intruders.

"Who is here?" I hissed, my heart hammering violently against my ribs. "How did they get in?"

"They have a universal master key for the neighborhood development," David said urgently, his hands frantically searching his pockets before pulling out a small, heavy-duty tactical flashlight. "Elena, listen to me. Take Lily. Go out the window into the back garden. Run to the neighbors and call 911 immediately."

"I'm not leaving you here!" I whispered fiercely.

"You have to! If they find the boxes, they won't leave witnesses!" David pleaded, his voice breaking with emotion. He grabbed my shoulders, looking deep into my eyes. "I love you. Now go! Take our daughter!"

Heavy, measured footsteps echoed down the wooden hallway. They weren't trying to be quiet anymore. Floorboards groaned under the weight of at least two heavy boots moving with deliberate, menacing purpose.

"Dad!" Lily whimpered, reaching out a hand toward him.

"Go, Lily! Now!" David commanded softly, shoving the bedroom window unlocked and pushing it open to let in the cool night air.

Just as I grabbed Lily's hand to pull her toward the open window, a loud, heavy kick smashed against the closed bedroom door. The wood splintered around the lock, and the door flew inward, slamming against the wall with a thunderous crash.
