Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Past

"Before who comes, David?" I demanded, stepping closer to him, my eyes darting to the window that looked out over our quiet suburban street. The streetlights flickered softly in the midnight fog. Everything outside looked entirely normal, which only made the terror inside the room feel more surreal.

David rubbed his temples, looking older and more worn than I had ever seen him. "Sit down, Elena. Both of you."

I didn't sit. I stood my ground near the door, my arms crossed tightly over my chest. Lily sat back down on her mattress, sniffling softly, her small hands clutching the edge of her blanket.

"You remember my old business partner, Marcus, right?" David began, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Marcus?" I frowned, trying to recall. "The one who partnered with you in that tech startup five years ago? The one who embezzled funds and fled the country right before the company went under? What does he have to do with any of this?"

"He didn't just flee the country, Elena," David said, looking up at me with profound guilt in his eyes. "He was working for a syndicate—a massive, international financial fraud ring. When he bailed, he left me holding the bag. They pinned his entire operation on me. I spent months cooperating with federal investigators just to stay out of prison, and they finally promised to leave us alone if I helped them track down Marcus's hidden assets."

"Federal investigators?" I repeated, skepticism sharp in my tone. "If this is federal business, why is your garage—or your office—not being used? Why are you hiding boxes of cash and goods in Lily's bedroom while she sleeps on the kitchen floor?"

"Because the agents handling my case were compromised," David whispered, leaning forward, lowering his voice even further. "Two weeks ago, I found out that someone inside the local field office was leaking my movements to Marcus's associates. They weren't protecting us; they were using me to locate where Marcus stashed the emergency contingency funds before he disappeared."

"And you found it?" I asked, a cold sweat breaking out across my back.

"I found it," David nodded grimly. "Marcus hid the digital cold wallets, bearer bonds, and cash backups in a safety deposit box under a false corporate name. I emptied it three days ago. If I handed it directly over to the corrupted bureau, it would have vanished, and we would have been framed as accomplices. I brought it here to inventory it, secure it, and hand it over directly to the federal attorney general's internal affairs division tomorrow morning."

The room fell dead silent. The ticking of the hallway clock sounded deafening. I looked at David, searching his face for any sign of deception. He looked terrified, exhausted, but completely sincere.

Before I could process the sheer magnitude of the danger we were in, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the front of the house.
