Chapter 3 - Confrontation in the Dark

I couldn't stay hidden a second longer. The weight of the silence, the deception, and the surreal nightmare unfolding before my eyes forced my hand.

I pushed the door open with a sharp creak. It swung wide, slamming softly against the wall.

David spun around so fast he nearly lost his footing, crashing against the stack of cardboard boxes. Lily gasped, pulling her blanket up to her chin, her eyes wide with terror as she saw me standing in the doorway.

"Elena," David breathed, color completely abandoning his face. "You... you're back early."

"My flight was delayed, but clearly, I arrived just in time," I said, my voice dangerously calm, though my hands were shaking uncontrollably. I stepped past the threshold, looking around the cluttered, suffocating room. "What is all of this, David? Why is our daughter's bedroom a storage locker? And what is inside those boxes?"

David swallowed hard, taking a hesitant step toward me, holding his hands up placatingly. "Elena, please. Let me explain. It’s not what it looks like. I swear to you, it’s complicated—"

"Complicated?" I cut him off, my voice rising. I pointed to the open box filled with money and jewelry. "There is cash and stolen merchandise—or God knows what else—stacked in our child's room while she sleeps on the kitchen floor! Have you lost your mind? Are you running some kind of criminal operation out of our house?"

"No! No, nothing like that!" David cried out, looking frantically at Lily, who had begun to cry silently.

"Mom, don't yell at Dad," Lily sobbed, crawling off her camp mattress and running over to grab the hem of my jacket. "He didn't do anything bad. He was trying to protect us."

I looked down at my daughter, my heart aching, but the confusion and fear inside me only deepened. "Protect us from what, Lily? Tell me the truth."

David closed his eyes, let out a long, ragged sigh, and sat down heavily on one of the boxes. "She's right, Elena. I was trying to protect you. But now that you're here... we don't have much time left before they come."
