Chapter 8 - Dawn in the East Wing

The heavy oak door swung open with a soft, long-dormant creak.

A gentle draft drifted out from the room, carrying the faint, ghostly scent of dried lavender and baby powder—a scent that had been sealed away behind wood and varnish for three long years.

Alessandro stepped across the threshold first, his hand still gently holding Clara's small fingers. Lily hesitated for a heartbeat, her heart pounding with a mixture of reverence and fear, before stepping in right behind them.

The room was bathed in the soft, silvery light of the clearing storm outside, the moon finally breaking through the heavy clouds. The pale yellow walls seemed to glow softly in the night. The small white crib stood by the window, its mobile of little wooden stars hanging motionless. The rocking chair sat beside it, draped with a soft cream-colored blanket. And on the changing table, the tiny pair of white shoes sat exactly where Isabella had placed them three autumns ago.

It wasn't a shrine to grief anymore. For the first time in three years, as the cool night air swept through the open window, it felt like a room waiting for life to return.

Alessandro walked over to the rocking chair. He didn't sit, but he rested his large hand on the back of it, his thumb tracing the smooth polished wood. The terrible tightness in his jaw had finally eased, replaced by an expression of profound, aching relief. He turned his head slowly, looking at Lily, who stood near the doorway with her arms wrapped around herself, tears quietly streaming down her face.

"I'm sorry," Alessandro said, his voice deep, rich, and entirely human for the first time. "For my temper. For the way I treated you in the foyer."

Lily shook her head, wiping her cheek quickly with the back of her hand. "You lost everything, Signor Moretti. I... I understand. No one has the right to judge how a father mourns."

Alessandro looked back down at Clara, who had let go of his hand and was now toddling over to the crib, standing on her tiptoes to peer inside at the small stuffed bear sitting on the mattress.

"She has your eyes," Alessandro murmured softly, stepping closer to Lily. "And your courage. It takes a lot of bravery to walk up to a monster and ask to hold his hand."

May you like

"You're not a monster," Lily replied quietly, her hazel eyes meeting his cold gray-blue ones, finding only warmth and vulnerability there now. "You're just a broken heart looking for a way back home."

Alessandro was silent for a long moment. He looked around the room, taking a deep, steady breath of the lavender-scented air. Then, he looked back at Lily, a decision forming in his mind—one that would change the trajectory of his empire, his estate, and his soul forever.
