Chapter 7 - The Unravelling of Ice

The silence that settled over the third-floor corridor was no longer filled with the threat of violence; it was heavy with a fragile, aching vulnerability that neither Lily nor Alessandro knew how to handle.

Alessandro stared down at his own hand—the hand that signed execution orders, controlled millions in illicit cash, and gripped the steering wheel of a doomed car in his nightmares. Slowly, mechanically, as if his limbs belonged to someone else, he uncurled his fingers.

Clara didn't hesitate. She wriggled out of Lily’s loosening grip, her small pink pajamas rustling, and placed her tiny, warm palm directly into Alessandro's massive, calloused hand. Her small fingers curled around his thumb.

Alessandro’s breath caught in his throat. A violent shudder wracked his broad shoulders. He sank slowly down onto one knee, bringing himself eye-level with the three-year-old child. The harsh light of the wall sconce glinted off the single tear track still drying on his cheek.

Lily watched in absolute bewilderment, her hand covering her mouth to hold back a gasp. The terrifying master of the New York underworld—the man the FBI spent decades trying to pin down—was kneeling on a dusty wooden floor, holding hands with a maid's toddler.

"She... she used to have a pink blanket," Alessandro whispered, his voice cracking, rough from years of disuse and choked grief. He wasn't looking at Clara anymore; his gaze drifted to the dark wood of the door behind them, seeing straight through it to the pale yellow room that had remained untouched for three years. "She liked when I sang to her. But I stopped. I locked the door because I thought... I thought if I kept her room the same, time would stop. But it didn't. It just got colder."

Clara squeezed his thumb tightly. "It's okay to open the door now, mister," she said softly, her small voice steady and comforting, like an old soul trapped in a child's body. "The sun is coming back out."

Alessandro closed his eyes. For three years, he had been a ghost haunting his own mansion. But looking at Clara, and then glancing up to catch Lily's wide, empathetic gaze in the dim light, he felt a strange, terrifying warmth seep back into his chest.

Slowly, Alessandro stood up, still holding Clara's small hand in his right. With his left hand, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a heavy, old-fashioned brass key that he had carried around his neck every single day since the funeral, and slid it into the heavy lock of the eastern door.

The lock turned with a clean, crisp sound that echoed like a bell through the quiet night.
