Chapter 3 - The Unthinkable Gesture

For five agonizing seconds, time seemed to freeze entirely in the grand foyer. The rain pattered softly against the tall stained-glass windows, and the distant hum of the estate's generator was the only sound besides the ragged breathing of Signora Greco, who looked like she might faint at any second.

Alessandro Moretti stared down at the small child. He had executed traitors with less focus than he was currently using to inspect Clara. Her small pink cardigan had a faint smudge of strawberry jam on the left pocket. Her hazel eyes were wide, bright, and completely devoid of the calculated fear he saw in every single person who entered his world—from the street thugs in Brooklyn to the politicians in Manhattan.

"Clara! No, oh God, I am so sorry, Signor Moretti, please!" Lily rushed forward, her face flushed with terror as she scooped her daughter up into her arms, nearly dropping her own cleaning supplies in her panic. She bowed her head so low her forehead nearly touched the marble floor. "She’s only three, she doesn't know any better, we'll leave right now, please forgive us—"

"Quiet."

The single word fell from Alessandro's lips like a falling slab of granite. It wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying, absolute authority that cut Lily off mid-sentence.

Lily froze, clutching Clara tightly against her chest. Clara, however, wriggled in her mother's grip, completely immune to the sheer terror radiating from the adults around her. She leaned forward, stretching her tiny hand out past her mother's shoulder. Her small, warm fingers brushed against the pristine fabric of Alessandro's charcoal coat sleeve.

"Daddy... Can I hold your hand just once?" Clara asked, her voice dropping into a soft, innocent tone that bypassed every defensive wall Alessandro had spent three years building around his shattered heart.

The words hung in the cold air of the foyer, sharp and impossible.

Daddy.

Alessandro staggered back half a step. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving his skin the color of ash. A sharp, searing pain stabbed straight through his chest, right where he kept the memory of a little girl who never got to grow up, never got to speak, and never got to ask for his hand. His breath caught in his throat. For a horrifying second, the grand foyer dissolved, and he was standing on a scorched patch of grass three years ago, smelling burning steel and smoke.

His hand rose instinctively, trembling slightly—a micro-movement that no one had ever witnessed in the history of the Moretti syndicate. His cold gray-blue eyes locked onto Clara's tiny, reaching hand.

"Take her upstairs," Alessandro said, his voice gratingly harsh, thick with a suppressed fury and an ancient agony that terrified even his own bodyguards. He did not look at Lily. He turned sharply on his heel, his heavy coat swirling around him, and strode toward his private study, slamming the heavy oak door behind him with a force that rattled the chandeliers.

Signora Greco let out a long, shuddering breath, crossing herself rapidly. She turned to Lily, whose hands were still shaking uncontrollably. "You... you have a guardian angel, child," the old woman whispered, her voice trembling. "Or a death wish. Come. I'll show you to the eastern quarters. But for the love of the saints, keep that child away from the master."
