Chapter 5 - Shadows and Slippered Steps

The first week at the Moretti estate passed in a blur of endless labor and suffocating tension. Lily learned the rhythms of the house quickly. She rose before dawn, scrubbed marble floors until her knees ached, and polished silver until she could see her own tired reflection in the forks and spoons. She kept Clara strictly confined to the staff quarters during the day under the watchful, albeit softening, eye of Signora Greco, who occasionally brought the little girl a small slice of apple pie or a warm cup of milk from the kitchen.
Yet, despite her best efforts to remain invisible, Lily couldn't shake the strange, magnetic pull of the massive house. Every time she walked past the grand staircase leading to the upper floors, she felt a quiet, persistent curiosity about the man who lived inside it like a king in a cage.
On Friday evening, a heavy storm rolled in from the Atlantic, shaking the old glass panes of the estate and plunging the sprawling mansion into roaring winds and flashing lightning.
Lily had stayed late in the library, organizing a massive collection of leather-bound Italian literature that had fallen into disarray. The room was vast, lined with towering bookshelves that stretched all the way up to the painted ceiling. A small reading lamp cast a warm, golden pool of light over the desk where she knelt, sorting through old journals.
Suddenly, a sharp crack of thunder echoed overhead, followed immediately by a total blackout. The library plunged into pitch blackness, save for the wild, jagged flashes of lightning cutting through the tall windows.
Lily gasped, dropping her stack of papers. In the sudden dark, the creaking sounds of the old house magnified tenfold. She stood up, her heart pounding, reaching blindly for her small phone to use its flashlight.
As she stepped out of the library alcove and into the dimly lit hallway, she heard a soft sound—a tiny patter of bare feet against the hardwood floor.
"Clara?" Lily whispered, panic instantly seizing her throat. "Clara, sweetie, are you out of bed?"
No answer. Only the soft patter continued, moving steadily toward the grand staircase and heading upward—straight toward the forbidden eastern corridor on the third floor.
"Oh god, no," Lily muttered, dropping her phone and running down the dark corridor as fast as her legs could carry her. The lightning flashed outside, illuminating the eerie shadows of the ancestral portraits.
She rounded the corner to the third floor just in time to see a tiny figure in pink pajamas standing right in front of the heavy, sealed oak door at the end of the corridor—the door that had remained locked for three years.
Clara was reaching her small hand up, her tiny fingers just a few inches away from the brass doorknob.
"Clara, stop!" Lily shrieked, sprinting forward and scooping her daughter up into her arms just as a blinding flash of lightning split the sky, illuminating the hallway with daylight intensity.

At that exact moment, another figure emerged from the shadows at the opposite end of the corridor.
Alessandro Moretti stood there in a black silk shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, corded muscle beneath. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying wrath. The power outage had forced him out of his study, and now he stood blocking the only escape route from the most sacred, forbidden room in his entire empire.
