Chapter 8 - The Rescue and the Trap
The crisp morning air hit them as they burst through the side exit into the north courtyard. The steel shutters had completely sealed the perimeter, leaving the mercenaries trapped in a ten-by-ten concrete enclosure.
Chloe was sitting on the ground near the edge of the cage, crying softly, having tripped in her panic.
"Chloe!" Naomi screamed, sprinting across the courtyard without a second thought.
"Naomi, wait!" Julian yelled, covering her advance with his sidearm raised.
Before the trapped mercenaries could even realize what was happening, Naomi reached the little girl, scooping her up into her arms and pulling her back toward the safety of the corridor. Chloe buried her face in Naomi's neck, sobbing with relief, wrapping her arms tightly around Naomi's shoulders.
"I've got you, sweetheart. You're safe. I've got you," Naomi panted, carrying the trembling child back toward Julian.
Julian handed Chloe off to a pair of loyal estate guards who had just rallied from the eastern wing, securing them inside the reinforced corridor. Then, he turned his full, terrifying attention back to the trapped mercenaries.
Sirens wailed in the distance. Federal strike teams and local authorities, alerted by the estate's automated distress signal, were finally swarming the outer gates.
The trapped mercenaries realized their game was entirely up. Dropping to their knees, they raised their hands in surrender as the steel shutters retracted just enough for the tactical police units to swarm in and slap cuffs on them.

Miles away, in a sleek corporate penthouse overlooking the city, Marcus Thorne slammed his fist into his desk as his primary live feed flickered to black. The raid had failed. The data was lost. And federal agents were already tracking the IP address of his private terminal.
Within two hours, breaking news banners flashed across every news channel in the country: "Apex Corp CEO Marcus Thorne Arrested in Federal Raid; Vance Robotics Security Breach Thwarted."
