Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Bargain

"No," Julian whispered, the color draining entirely from his face as he stared at the monitor.

On screen, three masked mercenaries stood in the pristine white medical suite. One of them had a heavy tactical arm around Dr. Hayes, while another stood over Chloe’s bed. The little girl was awake, sitting up in terror, her eyes wide with uncomprehending fear as a mercenary ripped the IV lines out of her arm and yanked her out of the bed.

"Julian Vance! Can you hear me?" a harsh, distorted voice crackled over the intercom speaker in the panic room.

Julian slammed his fist against the console, his knuckles turning white. He hit the transmit button, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal growl. "Thorne. If you touch one hair on her head, I will hunt you down to the ends of the earth. Every asset you own, every breath you take will be forfeit."

A cold, smooth laugh echoed through the bunker. “Save the dramatics, Julian. You know why we're here. The biometric drive is inside the girl. My men are authorized to perform field extraction if necessary, and trust me, surgical removal without anesthesia is messy, but it gets the job done.”

Naomi watched Julian's face contort with a agony so profound it made her own heart ache. She saw the exact moment the billionaire titan shattered, leaving behind only a desperate father willing to trade his entire empire for his child.

"Don't do it," Naomi said softly, placing her hand gently on Julian's forearm.

Julian looked down at her, his eyes swimming with helpless fury. "What choice do I have, Naomi? They'll kill her."

"You have the master decryption keys," Naomi said, her voice steadying despite the terror gripping her chest. "The data they want... you have it stored on the main mainframe right here in the estate, don't you? The data they couldn't hack remotely because it requires your dual-authorization signature."

Julian blinked, staring at her in sudden realization. "Yes... but if I transfer the raw source code to Thorne, Apex Corp will control the entire neural-interface grid. They'll have a monopoly on the future of medical technology."

"Tech can be rebuilt. Empires can be restarted," Naomi said fiercely, looking straight into his eyes. "Chloe can't."

Julian held her gaze for three long seconds. Then, a profound, solemn calm settled over his features. He nodded slowly.

He pressed the intercom transmit button again. "Thorne. Listen to me. Let the girl go. Send her out the front doors with two of your men. The moment I have visual confirmation that she is safe, I will open the mainframe terminal in this bunker and transfer every single file of the Apex decryption keys directly to your private server."

Silence stretched over the comms line for a tense moment. Then, Thorne's voice returned, laced with arrogant amusement. “You're in no position to negotiate, Julian. But... considering the data is worth billions, it's a fair trade. You have three minutes. Transfer the files first, or the girl bleeds.”

"No!" Julian shouted. "Girl first, or the deal is off permanently. Blow up the servers if you want, but you'll never see a line of code!"

A heavy pause. On the monitor, the lead mercenary holding Chloe received a sharp tap on his earpiece. The mercenary cursed under his breath, grabbed Chloe roughly by the arm, and began dragging her toward the exit of the medical wing.

“Fine, Vance. You have five minutes to initiate the transfer once she's out, or we burn your entire estate to the ground.”

The screen flickered as the mercenaries retreated toward the courtyard, dragging a crying Chloe with them.
