Chapter 5 - Siege at Vance Manor

"Code Black!" Julian roared into the desk communicator, his calm demeanor instantly replaced by the ruthless precision of a military strategist. "Activate internal lockdown protocols. Secure the medical wing immediately!"
Alarms began to wail throughout the massive estate, a low, pulsing drone that made the glass in the windows vibrate. Red emergency lights blinked to life along the hallways, casting long, dramatic shadows across the polished floors.
Naomi sprang from her chair, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "What do we do? Should I hide?"
"Stay right behind me," Julian ordered, reaching into a hidden wall panel behind his desk and pulling out a sleek, matte-black tactical sidearm. He checked the magazine with a practiced, fluid click. "Thorne's mercenaries. They think they can strike before our main security detail can mobilize."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the study blew inward with a splintering crash.
Two heavily armed men in black tactical gear burst through the threshold, weapons raised. They didn't hesitate.
Julian moved with terrifying speed. He shoved Naomi behind the heavy mahogany desk, raised his sidearm, and fired twice. The first mercenary dropped instantly, his weapon clattering against the hardwood floor. The second mercenary ducked behind a bookshelf, returning fire. Splinters exploded from the edge of the desk, raining wood chips over Naomi's head as she curled into a tight ball on the floor.
"Naomi, stay down!" Julian yelled over the deafening crack of gunfire.
With a tactical roll, Julian closed the distance to the bookshelf, slamming the butt of his weapon into the mercenary's helmet, sending the man crashing unconscious to the ground.
Panting heavily, Julian rushed back to the desk and hauled Naomi to her feet. "Are you hit?"
"No! No, I'm okay!" she gasped, trembling from head to toe.
"We need to move. The panic room is down the hall," Julian said, gripping her hand tightly.
They bolted out of the study and into the corridor, but their path was cut off by thick, acrid smoke pouring from the western wing. Automatic fire echoed from the main foyer — Vance’s private security detail was holding the line, but the mercenaries were pressing hard, systematically breaching the manor's defenses.
"This way! Through the courtyard passage!" Julian redirected them, pulling Naomi toward a side staircase that led down to the estate's lower level.
As they descended into the dim subterranean corridor, the sound of explosions shook the foundation above them. Dust rained from the ceiling. Naomi tripped over her own feet, but Julian caught her waist before she hit the ground, hauling her up effortlessly.
"I've got you," he panted, his eyes fierce. "We're almost there."
They reached a heavy steel vault door hidden behind a panel of wine racks in the estate's underground cellar. Julian punched a rapid sequence into the biometric keypad and pressed his palm against the scanner. The heavy locks disengaged with a pneumatic hiss, swinging open to reveal a secure, self-contained panic room outfitted with communications arrays, medical supplies, and emergency power.
"In! Go!" Julian pushed Naomi inside, stepping in right behind her and sealing the heavy steel door shut just as a burst of automatic gunfire peppered the outer wall.
They were safe inside the bunker, cut off from the rest of the world — but as Julian checked the multi-feed security monitors, his face went completely white.

The monitors in the panic room showed that a second strike team had breached the medical wing.
And they had just found Chloe.
