Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Apex Corp

Julian led Naomi down a sweeping glass-paneled corridor to a private study that overlooked a sprawling private garden. The room smelled of old leather, roasted coffee beans, and polished mahogany. A massive digital display on one wall showed muted financial tickers and security layouts, while another screen displayed aerial footage of the warehouse where Naomi had spent the night.
"Sit, Naomi," Julian said, gesturing to a plush velvet armchair by the fireplace. He poured two cups of coffee from a silver pot and handed one to her. Her hands were still slightly shaky as she took it.
"Thank you," she murmured.
"No. Thank you," Julian said, taking a seat opposite her. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his expression grim. "The police think this was a random extortion plot. They're looking at disgruntled former employees or small-time criminals. But they're wrong."
Naomi took a sip of the rich, hot coffee, feeling it thaw her insides. "Wrong? Why?"
"Because of who I am, and what we're building at Vance Robotics," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave. "Six months ago, we acquired a rival tech firm called Apex Corp. Their CEO, Marcus Thorne, fought the takeover tooth and nail. When we won the acquisition, he threatened that I would 'pay a price higher than money.'"
Naomi's eyes widened. "You think Thorne took Chloe?"
"I don't think. I know," Julian said, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "Apex was developing a classified neural-interface grid—technology that could revolutionize medicine, but also military applications. Thorne buried the research inside secure servers. When we took over, we found the encrypted files, but the decryption keys were missing. They were locked in a physical biometric drive... a drive that was surgically implanted under my daughter's skin during a routine medical procedure last year."
The room seemed to drop ten degrees. Naomi set her coffee cup down with a sharp clink. "They didn't kidnap her for ransom. They kidnapped her for the data."
"Exactly," Julian said. "They realized they couldn't hack the system remotely, so they took the hardware. But Chloe fell violently ill last night — an allergic reaction to the tracker they forced her to swallow earlier that week. The kidnappers panicked. They dumped her in that warehouse, planning to retrieve her once her fever broke or stabilize her elsewhere. But they didn't count on you missing your bus."
Naomi stared at him, the terrifying scale of what she had walked into finally dawning on her. "If they find out I was there... if they find out I protected her..."
"They won't touch you," Julian interrupted, his voice cutting through her panic with absolute, unyielding steel. "My security team has already locked down your apartment, your university records, and your digital footprint. As far as the public and Marcus Thorne know, Chloe was recovered by a specialized private retrieval team. Your name isn't in the official reports."
He stood up and walked over to the window, looking out over the gardens. "You are completely safe here, Naomi. But that brings us to the next problem. Marcus Thorne knows we have Chloe back. Which means he knows his plan failed. He's desperate, and a desperate man with a private militia is dangerous."
Before Naomi could process the warning, a sharp chime echoed through the study. A security monitor on the desk flared red.

Mrs. Gable's voice crackled through the intercom, breathless and panicked. "Mr. Vance! We have an unauthorized perimeter breach at the east gate. Multiple vehicles. They're bypassing our jamming signals!"
Julian’s head snapped toward the screen. The cameras at the estate's outer perimeter showed three black SUVs ramming straight through the reinforced iron gates, tearing up the manicured lawn.
