Chapter 9 - Redemption

A year after the painful night in Maplewood, Christmas Eve arrived once again.
This time, Margaret hosted Christmas dinner at her home in Princeton. The house was bright with yellow lights, the smell of pine, and the sound of family. Eleanor was there, chatting happily with Claire, while the grandchildren decorated the tree.
At 7:00 p.m., Daniel walked into the kitchen where Margaret was finishing the gravy. He handed her a small, neatly wrapped box tied with a green ribbon.
"What's this?" Margaret asked.
"Open it," Daniel smiled.
Inside was a simple brass door key attached to a wooden keychain. Carved into the wood were the words: Always Welcome.

"It’s the key to our townhouse," Daniel said softly. "No matter where we live, or how small the place is, there will always be a room for you. No conditions, no expectations."
Margaret held the key in her palm, feeling its solid weight, and felt tears warm her eyes—not of sorrow, but of peace.
