Chapter 5 - Rebuilding from the Ashes
Spring arrived, bringing green shoots through the thawed earth of Princeton. For the first time in fourteen years, Margaret spent her time focusing entirely on herself and her community. She volunteered at the local library, joined a gardening club, and took trips with her sister, Eleanor.
Meanwhile, Daniel’s transformation was slow but genuine. The loss of easy wealth stripped away his vanity. Without the burden of maintaining a grand illusion, he and Claire began attending marriage counseling. They learned to communicate without pretense.
In May, Daniel called Margaret with news. "My agency turned a small profit this month," he said. The tremor of panic in his voice from months ago was gone, replaced by a quiet, grounded pride. "It’s only $1,200 after taxes and expenses, but it’s real."
"I’m proud of you, Daniel," Margaret said. It was the first time she had said those words to him in years.

On the other end of the line, Daniel went silent for several seconds before clearing his throat. "Can I bring the kids over this weekend? Not for dinner or a party. Just to help you in the garden?"
"I would like that very much," Margaret replied.
