Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

Over the next two weeks, the artificial lifestyle Daniel and Claire had constructed began to collapse under its own weight. Without Margaret paying the $4,200 monthly mortgage gap, the private school tuitions, and the company’s overhead, reality arrived like an avalanche.

Claire visited Margaret alone in early January. She brought no harsh words this time, only a folder of unpaid bills and a face pale with stress. Sitting on Margaret’s sofa, the fire reflecting in her eyes, Claire broke down.

"We owe over $180,000 in short-term debt," Claire confessed, her hands trembling. "Daniel always told me your money was an advance on his inheritance. I thought... I thought you were just controlling us."

Margaret poured her a cup of chamomile tea. "I never asked for control, Claire. I asked for respect. I funded your lives because I missed my son, and you both treated me like an automated bank terminal with an inconvenient presence."

"What are we going to do?" Claire wept. "They’re going to foreclose on the house."

"You are going to downsize," Margaret said firmly. "You are going to sell the luxury cars, enroll the children in public school—which is excellent in your district—and learn what things actually cost."
