Six months passed. The silence from my father and brother was a peaceful gift, even if it was borne of shame and debt.
Without the burden of funding three extra adults and a spoiled niece, our savings flourished. Sarah and I realized that the $16,800 we had saved was just the tip of the iceberg—we were saving nearly $35,000 a year by stopping all financial support to my father and brother.
Instead of throwing another standard backyard party, we decided to give Ethan an experience he would never forget. He had developed a deep passion for astronomy and space travel over the winter months, his room now decorated with glow-in-the-dark constellations and NASA posters.
I used a fraction of the money I saved to book a private VIP tour of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, complete with an astronaut meet-and-greet, a rocket launch viewing, and a week-long stay at an oceanfront resort.
