Chapter 10 - The Sweetest Slice

A year after the mud bucket incident, our backyard was quiet, green, and serene. The oak tree under which the original cake had been destroyed was now casting a cool, gentle shade over a brand-new custom wooden workbench I had built for Ethan.
It was a Sunday afternoon. Ethan was sitting at the bench, carefully painting a scale model of a space shuttle. Sarah was sitting nearby on the patio, reading a book and sipping iced tea.
I walked out with a small plate carrying a single slice of vanilla buttercream cake topped with a ring of fresh berries. I placed it next to Ethan’s paint set.
He looked up, wiped a speck of white paint off his nose, and smiled. "What's this for, Dad?"
"Just because," I said, leaning down to ruffle his hair. "Every good engineer needs fuel."
Ethan took a bite, chewed thoughtfully, and looked out across the lawn toward the spot where the old bounce house had stood.
"You know, Dad," he said quietly, setting his fork down. "Last year, when that happened... I thought my birthday was ruined forever."
"And now?" I asked.
He looked at me, his eyes bright, honest, and completely healed. "Now I think it was the best birthday I ever had. Because after that day, everything got real. We got real friends, we got to see a rocket launch, and nobody yells at us anymore."

He picked up his paint brush and went back to work on his shuttle.
I walked back over to Sarah, wrapped my arm around her shoulders, and looked out over our home. We had stripped away the poison, protected our son, and built a life rooted in respect and genuine love. The cake had been ruined, but the foundation of our family was finally unbreakable.
