Chapter 5 - The Price of Pride
By the end of the month, the financial pressure drove Arthur and Michael to desperate measures. They tried to turn the extended family against me, launching a campaign of guilt and lies on Facebook and family group chats. They claimed I was financially abusing a young girl and withholding her "inheritance."
However, I had anticipated their move. I posted a single, unedited video taken by our backyard security camera on the day of the party.
The video was crystal clear: It showed Chloe meticulously mixing dirt and water at the hose, carrying the orange bucket with deliberate intent, and dumping it over Ethan's cake. It captured the exact audio of Arthur laughing and saying, "I promised her a new iPhone if she did it," followed by Michael’s proud smirk.
The fallout was instantaneous and brutal.
Family members who had previously sent me scolding texts suddenly went radio silent. Aunts, uncles, and cousins left the group chat one by one. The parents of the ten children who had fled Ethan's party saw the video and shared it among the local neighborhood networks. Chloe’s pristine reputation at school evaporated overnight; parents refused to invite her to playdates or birthday parties, horrified by her callous behavior.

Desperate to save face and keep Chloe in the Oak Crest Tennis Academy, Michael took out a high-interest personal loan to cover the $9,800 tuition. But money couldn't buy back what they had destroyed.
