Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

Not ten minutes after the service was cut, my front door practically rattled off its hinges. Michael didn't bother ringing the bell; he banged his fists against the oak paneling until I pulled it open. Behind him stood our father, Arthur, his face flushed red with indignation, holding a pale, crying Chloe by the arm.

"What the hell did you do, David?!" Michael bellowed, shoving his phone into my face. "Chloe's tennis account is suspended! And her phone won't connect! What kind of sick game are you playing?"

I stood in the doorway, my arms crossed, perfectly calm. "I didn't do anything to her account, Michael. I simply stopped paying for it."

Arthur stepped forward, his eyes wide with outrage. "You cheap, petty bastard! She's an eleven-year-old child! You promised her that academy! You promised us that cruise!"

"I never promised her anything," I said, keeping my voice steady so Ethan wouldn't be frightened upstairs. "I sponsored a girl I thought had character. I funded a vacation for a family I thought loved my son. Yesterday, you stood in my backyard and laughed while she destroyed an eight-year-old's birthday. You bribed her to ruin his day."

"It was a joke!" Michael screamed, his hands shaking. "It was just dirt! Kids do stupid things! You're going to destroy your niece's future over a piece of cake?!"

"It wasn't just dirt, Michael. It was a message. You taught her that my family exists for your amusement and your financial exploitation." I looked directly at Arthur. "And you, Dad... you paid her in tech to break your grandson's heart. So now, you can pay her tennis tuition. You can pay for her phone. And you can pay for her vacation."

"I don't have that kind of money!" Arthur spat.

"Then I guess she isn't playing tennis," I replied quietly. "And she certainly isn't going on a cruise."

I stepped back and closed the door directly in their faces, locking it with a firm click.
