Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Parasite

Over the next two weeks, the true depth of my family's financial parasite-host dynamic laid itself bare. Without my silent subsidization, Michael’s household collapsed under the weight of its actual income.

Lisa, Michael’s wife, had been kept entirely in the dark about where their extra lifestyle funding came from. She had genuinely believed Michael’s claims that he was earning heavy bonuses at Lowe's. When the $9,800 tennis bill arrived in their mailbox alongside a letter from Disney demanding a cancellation fee for the remaining balances, the truth came crashing down on her.

Lisa showed up at my house alone on a Tuesday afternoon while Ethan was at school. She was pale, hollow-eyed, and holding a stack of papers.

"David... please tell me this isn't true," she whispered, her voice trembling as she sat at my kitchen island. "Michael told me you were just being bitter over a cake. He said you stole money from an account your mother left for Chloe."

I brought up my bank statements on my desktop and turned the monitor toward her. I showed her five years of wire transfers, sponsorship receipts, and payment confirmations.

"My mother didn't leave Chloe a trust fund, Lisa," I said gently. "I paid for every single season of tennis. I paid for the cruise. I paid for Dad's home repairs. Michael hasn't earned a bonus in three years."

Lisa covered her face with her hands and began to sob hysterically. "He used me... he lied to me about everything. He told Chloe that you were rich and selfish, and that she deserved to take you down a notch. He told her to ruin Ethan's party because he was jealous of the house we bought!"

The truth was far worse than simple spite. It was built on years of engineered resentment cultivated by my father, who had always favored Michael but relied on my wallet.
