Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Light

The aftermath of the trial brought a profound, beautiful silence. The extended family members who had enabled Rose for decades attempted to send letters of apology, but Ethan and I burned them unopened. We didn't need their toxic regret. We had built a fortress of our own.

With the stolen inheritance money recovered by the state through the liquidation of Rose’s assets, the $50,000 medical fund was fully replenished, with additional funds secured for Hope's future education.

We decided to leave the city with its gray skies and painful memories. We bought a beautiful, sun-drenched house in a quiet coastal town, surrounded by ancient oak trees and a garden filled with blooming jasmine. The house had a wrap-around porch where Ethan and I would sit in the evenings, watching the sunset while Hope slept soundly in her crib.
