Chapter 1 - The Wrought-Iron Betrayal

My mother treated my pregnant belly like a piggy bank she needed to crack open before the baby arrived. When I refused to hand over the $50,000 medical fund at my baby shower, she snatched a heavy wrought-iron rod from a display and slammed it directly into my stomach.
The blow stole every breath from my lungs. I collapsed beneath the canopy of pastel balloons, both arms wrapped protectively around my eight-month belly while sixty guests stood frozen in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.
My mother didn't rush toward me. She didn't drop the weapon in horror. Instead, she calmly nudged the wooden donation box closer with the toe of her shoe, glaring down at my bleeding form as though I had forced her hand. The scent of the catered food was instantly overpowered by the sharp, metallic tang of my own blood pooling on the marble floor.
“You brought this on yourself,” she hissed, her voice a jagged blade slicing through the suffocating silence. “That money belongs to family.”
“Someone call an ambulance!” my best friend, Mara, cried out, her voice cracking with terror.
My husband, Ethan, shoved through the paralyzed crowd, his hands shaking violently as he tried to keep me conscious. Blood soaked through my silk maternity dress, and inside me, the frantic kicking of my baby girl suddenly... stopped.
“Mom... you hit me,” I gasped, struggling to keep my eyes open, needing the room to witness her crime.
But Rose was a master of the stage. Without missing a beat, her face contorted into a mask of pure, theatrical terror. She dropped the iron rod and let out a heart-wrenching, pitch-perfect wail.
“She attacked me first!” she shouted to the horrified guests, pointing a trembling finger at my prone body. “Everyone knows she's been completely unstable! She lunged at me!”
My brother, Kyle, eagerly stepped out of the crowd. He wasn't calling 911. He was holding his phone up, filming the chaos, expertly framing the scene to back up her lies and repeating her false narrative to the stunned onlookers.

They looked down at me—bleeding, broken, and fading fast. They thought they had engineered the perfect, public destruction of my life to steal my daughter’s lifeline. They thought I was just a fragile, emotional pregnant woman who had finally snapped.
But as my vision darkened, I didn't feel despair. My mother had forgotten one crucial detail. Before I was her victim, I was a Senior Prosecutor who built ironclad cases against predators for a living. She thought she had written the perfect tragedy, entirely unaware that I had already set the stage for her execution...
