Chapter 6 - The Grand Jury Indictment

Two weeks later, I walked into the courthouse. I was weak, relying on a cane, but my posture was upright. The physical pain was nothing compared to the fierce protectiveness burning in my chest.

Rose and Kyle were brought in from the holding cells for their arraignment. For the first time in my life, I saw my mother without her expensive jewelry, her perfectly coiffed hair, or her arrogant smirk. She was wearing an orange jumpsuit, her hair messy, looking every bit the desperate inmate she was. Kyle looked completely broken, trembling beside his public defender.

The defense attorney stood up, attempting to paint a picture of a distraught grandmother who had a "sudden emotional break" due to financial desperation.

When it was the prosecution's turn, Arthur didn't just present the video. He called me to the stand as the primary witness.

I looked directly at my mother. She tried to glare at me, to use the old maternal intimidation tactics that had kept me compliant during my childhood. But those tactics had no power over a mother who had almost lost her child.

"On the afternoon of the baby shower," I testified, my voice echoing clearly through the courtroom, "Rose Davis did not experience an emotional break. She made a calculated, financial decision. She weaponized a heavy iron rod to extract money she felt entitled to, showing a complete and utter disregard for human life. She targeted my womb because she knew it was my most vulnerable point."

The grand jury didn't even need an hour to deliberate. They returned with a swift, unanimous decision: True bill on all counts. Attempted First-Degree Murder, Attempted Feticide, and Felony Child Abuse for Rose. Conspiracy and Tampering with Evidence for Kyle. No bail. They were remanded to custody until trial.
