Chapter 3 - The Cold Room of Miracles

The hospital was a blur of fluorescent lights, shouting doctors, and the terrifying, rhythmic beep of a failing heart monitor. I was rushed straight into the operating room for an emergency C-section. Internal bleeding was severe; the blunt force trauma had caused a placental abruption.

"We're losing the fetal heartbeat!" a nurse shouted.

I looked at Ethan, who was forced to stay outside the sterile zone. He looked broken, pressed against the glass window, his face stained with tears. Please, I prayed into the void as the anesthesia began to take hold. Take me, but let her live.

Hours later, I woke up to a heavy, dull ache in my abdomen and the steady, agonizing hum of a post-op recovery room. Ethan was holding my hand, his eyes bloodshot, his face pale.

"Maya," he whispered, his voice cracking.

"Is she..." I couldn't finish the sentence. The terror was a physical weight on my chest.

"She's alive," Ethan said, a choked sob escaping him. "She's in the NICU. Her name is Hope. The doctor said the blow hit the lower part of your pelvis, which absorbed the worst of the impact, shielding her torso. But the trauma triggered her cardiac issue early. She’s on life support, Maya. The $50,000... we need every cent of it for the surgery scheduled in forty-eight hours."

Relief washed over me, so sharp it made me cry, but it was instantly followed by a cold, burning rage. Rose hadn't just assaulted me; she had actively attempted to murder her own granddaughter for a stack of cash.

Just then, the door to my recovery room opened. It wasn't a doctor. It was Detective Vance, a seasoned investigator I had worked with on dozens of felony cases. He looked grim, holding a clipboard.

"Maya," Vance said softly. "I'm glad you're awake. We have a problem. Your mother and brother have already filed a formal police report against you for aggravated assault. They brought in 'witness statements' from three extended family members who swear you attacked Rose. And Kyle’s video... it’s heavily edited, but out of context, it looks bad for you."

I smiled, though it pained my stitched abdomen. "Detective, I want you to call Assistant District Attorney Marcus Vance. Tell him to open the cloud drive titled 'Operation Trojan Rose.' And then, I want you to secure an arrest warrant."
