Chapter 9 - Healing the Roots

When we returned home, life moved forward in beautiful, steady ways. Julian and Maya lived just two towns over, and over the next year, our blended dynamic grew naturally, rooted in mutual respect and genuine affection.

One afternoon, my father called. He sounded frail. He had been diagnosed with an early-stage heart condition, but his voice was calm and resigned.

I decided to visit him at his small cottage, bringing Oliver with me for the first time in three years. I set strict conditions: no drama, no bringing up my mother, and the second Oliver felt uncomfortable, we were leaving.

When we arrived, my father didn't rush Oliver or demand a hug. He sat gently in his armchair and simply watched Oliver draw pictures at the kitchen table.

"He looks so much like you when you were little," my father said softly, tears glistening in his eyes. "So full of wonder."

"He's a great kid, Dad," I said, sitting opposite him. "Because he knows he's loved without conditions."

My father nodded slowly, acknowledging the weight of those words. "I am so sorry, Priscilla. For everything I let happen. You were a better mother to him than we ever were to you."

It was the full, unvarnished apology I had waited a lifetime to hear. I didn't forget the past, but in that quiet room, I finally let go of the anger.
