Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Ally

Six months after the trial, a knock came at my new front door. I looked through the peephole and was surprised to see my father standing on the porch. He looked years older, his shoulders stooped, but his eyes were clear of the smugness that used to define him.
I opened the door, keeping the security chain engaged. "Dad. You shouldn't be here."
"I know," he said softly, handing a thick envelope through the gap. "I'm not here to fight, Priscilla. I left your mother last week. I couldn't do it anymore. The lies, the cruelty... watching her try to destroy you made me realize how much I had surrendered my own humanity just to keep her quiet."
I looked at the envelope. "What's this?"
"It's a full record of the family trust your grandfather left for you," he explained, his voice cracking. "Your mother hid it from you when you turned twenty-one so you would remain financially dependent on us—or rather, so we could remain dependent on you. It's yours. It always was."

He looked past me into the hallway, catching a glimpse of Oliver's toys scattered on the rug. Tears welled in his eyes.
"I don't expect you to forgive me," my father said quietly. "I was a coward. But I want you to know... I'm glad you were strong enough to break the chain."
