Chapter 8 - The Joy of Belonging

At the resort, Oliver spent hours zooming down the water slide, his ecstatic laughter ringing across the pool deck. Watching him play freely, without fear of judgment, healed the remaining scars in my heart.

While at the resort, we met Julian, a widowed landscape architect vacationing with his eight-year-old daughter, Maya. Julian was kind, grounded, and possessed a quiet warmth that felt like sunshine after a long storm. Maya and Oliver hit it off instantly, becoming inseparable buddies over ice creams and sandcastle competitions.

For the first time in my adult life, I experienced what healthy, effortless connection looked like. Julian didn't expect me to prove my worth. He didn't play emotional games. He simply listened, laughed, and appreciated me for who I was.

By the end of the trip, as we sat together on the beach watching our kids hunt for seashells at sunset, Julian turned to me and said, "You've built an incredible life for your son, Priscilla. It's rare to see someone with such a strong sense of purpose."

"I had to fight hard for it," I admitted, watching Oliver laugh as a tiny wave washed over his feet.

"Then you deserve every single second of this peace," Julian said softly, holding my hand.
