Chapter 9 - The Trial of Truth

Judge Alvarez did not mince words. She denied the emergency petition for guardianship on the spot, dismissing it with prejudice. But she didn't stop there.

"What I have witnessed today goes far beyond a civil family dispute," the judge declared. "The court finds the actions of Diane Vance and Chloe Vance to be actively detrimental, abusive, and hazardous to the physical and psychological safety of the minor child, Lily Vance."

She turned her attention to the bailiff and the CPS caseworker, Margaret Cho, who was sitting in the back of the courtroom.

"I am issuing a permanent Restraining Order against Diane Vance and Chloe Vance. They are ordered to remain at least one thousand feet away from Emily Vance, Lily Vance, their home, workplace, and school. Any violation will result in immediate arrest."

The judge hammered the gavel again. "Furthermore, I am referring this matter directly to the District Attorney's office for criminal investigation into child endangerment, conspiracy to commit fraud, and stalking. Officer, please detain Chloe Vance for questioning regarding the arson incident last night, as an active police report has been filed."

Two police officers inside the courtroom immediately stepped forward. Chloe panicked, bursting into tears as handcuffs were placed around her wrists.

"Mom! Do something! Help me!" Chloe screamed as she was led out of the courtroom.

But Diane didn't look at her younger daughter. She was staring at me, her eyes filled with a venomous, desperate hatred. The wealth she had tried so hard to steal was forever out of her reach, and her reputation was permanently ruined.

As the officers escorted Diane out of the building to prevent any further confrontation, I finally allowed myself to sink back into my chair. The heavy weight that had rested on my chest since the moment I walked home from the hospital early finally lifted.

Marcus put a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "It's over, Emily. You won. They can never touch her again."
