Chapter 5 - The Legal Battle Begins

The next morning, the physical toll of the ordeal caught up with me. I woke up with a fever and a deep, throbbing ache in my abdomen. I had torn two of my internal laparoscopic stitches while lifting Lily the day before.
I couldn't afford to be hospitalized again. I called my best friend, Sarah, who arrived within twenty minutes. Sarah was a fierce, no-nonsense paralegal who loved Lily like her own niece. When I showed her the evidence and explained the situation, she immediately went into battle mode.
"You are going to bed, you are taking your antibiotics, and you are letting me handle the paperwork," Sarah ordered, forcing me down onto the couch. "I'm calling Marcus Vance."
Marcus was my cousin on my father's side, a brilliant family law attorney who had severed ties with Diane years ago. When Marcus heard what had happened, he canceled his entire afternoon schedule and drove straight to my apartment.
By 2:00 PM, Marcus was sitting at my kitchen table, reviewing the videos, the group chats, and the estate documents from Vance & Sterling LLP.
"This is criminal extortion and child endangerment," Marcus said, his voice laced with quiet fury. "Diane and Chloe have crossed a line they can't come back from. They used a fraudulent CPS report to attempt an emergency removal. In California, filing a false police or CPS report is a misdemeanor, but when combined with the conspiracy to defraud a minor of a trust fund, we’re looking at grand larceny charges and harassment."
"I just want them away from Lily," I whispered, holding a warm compress against my aching stomach. "She woke up screaming twice last night, thinking the 'delivery man' was coming back."
"We file for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) first thing tomorrow morning," Marcus stated. "We will request a stay-away order covering you, Lily, her daycare, and this apartment. I will also contact the probate trustee and inform them of a suspected attempt to defraud the beneficiary."
Just as Marcus finished speaking, my phone buzzed on the table. It was an unknown number.
I answered it and put it on speaker.
"Emily," Diane’s voice purred through the line. She sounded entirely unbothered, almost cheerful. "I assume the social worker paid you a visit? I told you that you couldn't protect her. This is just the beginning, sweetie. You can give up gracefully and let me handle the trust, or we can make sure the entire world sees how unstable you really are."
Marcus gestured fiercely for me to keep her talking.
"You put my daughter in a box, Mom," I said, my voice trembling with genuine rage. "You terrorized a four-year-old for money."
"Money? It’s family money, Emily. It belongs to us, not a brat who doesn't even know how to count to one hundred yet. You have forty-eight hours to sign the guardianship modification paperwork I'm sending over. If you don't, I will ensure the courts take her from you permanently, and you'll never see her again."

She hung up.
Marcus looked up from his notepad, a grim smile playing on his lips. "She just confessed to extortion on a recorded line. Let them send the paperwork. It’s the final nail in their coffin."
