Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Estate

The courtroom fell completely silent as the video began to play on the large monitors.

Lily’s tiny, terrified voice echoed through the room: "Please don’t take me! I’ll be good. I promise I’ll be good."

The screen showed Rick leaning over the box, holding the packing tape, while the bold letters DEFECTIVE CHILD RETURNS faced the camera. The audio captured Diane’s distinct, cruel laughter in the background.

Judge Alvarez’s expression transformed from professional neutrality to profound disgust. She looked up from the monitor and stared directly at Diane, who had suddenly gone rigid in her chair. Chloe’s smug smile vanished entirely, her face draining of color.

"Is that not enough, Your Honor?" Marcus pressed, his voice booming. "We also submit the verified text messages from the phone used to record this video, detailing a conspiracy between Diane Vance, Chloe Vance, and a third party named Rick to deliberately terrorize a four-year-old child in order to fabricate evidence for this exact custody hearing."

Marcus handed over the transcripts of the “Project Fresh Start” group chat, along with the financial documents from Vance & Sterling LLP detailing the three-million-dollar trust fund.

"This was never about the child’s well-being," Marcus stated firmly. "This was a coordinated, malicious attempt to commit fraud and extort guardianship of a minor for financial gain. Furthermore, we have filed a formal police report regarding the stalking of my client by the individual named Rick, and we possess eyewitness testimony placing Chloe Vance at the scene of the arson at my client's apartment building last night."

Diane’s attorney looked at the documents, looked at his client, and slowly sat down. He leaned over and whispered something to Diane, his face grim. She aggressively shook her head, grabbing her purse as if she wanted to flee the room.

"Mrs. Vance," Judge Alvarez said, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly quiet register. "Do you have anything to say for yourself?"

Diane stood up, her composure completely shattering. "This is a fabrication! Emily is manipulating the evidence! She was always a difficult child, she’s just like her father—"

"Silence," Judge Alvarez commanded, slamming her gavel down with a crack that made everyone jump. "I have seen and heard enough."
