Chapter 7 - The Unravelling Secret

The fire had been started in a trash chute on the third floor—a deliberate act of arson, though the fire department managed to contain it quickly. No one was hurt, but the intent was clear: Diane and Chloe wanted a video of me looking frantic, disorganized, and unstable in an emergency.

When we arrived at the family courthouse the next morning, I was exhausted, but my resolve was forged in steel. I wore a professional navy blue suit that carefully concealed the bandages on my abdomen. Lily was safe with Sarah at an undisclosed location.

Diane and Chloe were already sitting at the petitioner's table, flanked by a slick, expensive-looking attorney named Richard Vance (no relation to us, though Diane undoubtedly picked him for the name). Chloe looked smug, while Diane maintained the poised expression of a grieving matriarch forced to step in and save her family.

The judge, a stern woman named Honorable Judith Alvarez, took her seat and reviewed the filings.

"We are here today regarding the emergency petition for temporary guardianship of Lily Vance, filed by her grandmother, Diane Vance," Judge Alvarez began. "Counselor, state your case."

Richard Vance stood up. "Your Honor, my client is deeply concerned for the safety of her granddaughter. The mother, Emily Vance, recently underwent major surgery and has shown signs of severe emotional instability. We have photographic evidence of the mother unable to handle basic emergency situations, including a fire that occurred at her building just last night, where she appeared disoriented and unable to properly secure the child."

He handed a packet of photos—screenshots from Chloe’s video—to the bailiff.

"Furthermore," the attorney continued, "we have evidence that the child is suffering from severe behavioral issues under the mother's care, throwing uncontrollable tantrums that require intense disciplinary intervention."

Judge Alvarez looked at the photos, then turned her gaze toward Marcus. "Mr. Vance, what is your response?"

Marcus stood up, perfectly calm. "Your Honor, we are glad the petitioner brought up the topic of 'disciplinary intervention' and emotional distress. Because we have the definitive proof of exactly who caused that distress, and why."

Marcus walked over to the evidence projector. "We present to the court a video recorded by the petitioner’s younger daughter, Chloe Vance, just four days ago."

He pressed play.
