Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Past

I opened the door, keeping the safety chain engaged.
"Can I help you?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands.
"Emily Vance?" the woman asked. She didn't smile. Her eyes scanned the small portion of the hallway visible to her. "My name is Margaret Cho. I’m an emergency caseworker with Child Protective Services. This is Officer Davis. We received an anonymous tip regarding the immediate safety and well-being of your daughter, Lily."
My stomach dropped. Diane had moved faster than I anticipated.
"An anonymous tip about what, exactly?" I asked, unlatching the chain and opening the door fully. I had nothing to hide, and refusing entry to the police would only play into my mother's hands.
"The caller stated that you recently underwent major surgery, left your child unattended with dangerous individuals, and that the child is currently experiencing severe emotional distress due to an unstable home environment," Margaret Cho said, stepping into the apartment.
Her eyes immediately landed on the massive cardboard box in the living room. GIRL FACTORY — DEFECTIVE CHILD RETURNS.
Officer Davis frowned, his hand instinctively resting near his utility belt. "What is that?"
"That," I said, my voice cracking slightly, "is the reason you were called here. But not by me. By the people who actually did this."
I led them into the living room, refusing to let panic dictate my actions. I sat them down and handed Margaret Cho my sister's phone, which still displayed the group chat "Project Fresh Start." I also pulled up the video I had emailed to myself—the twelve-minute recording of my daughter sobbing inside that box while my mother laughed.
As the video played, the caseworker's expression shifted from professional skepticism to absolute horror. Officer Davis stared at the screen, his jaw tightening.
"My mother and sister did this while I was in the hospital," I explained, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "I came home twenty-four hours early because I missed my daughter. I walked in on this. I kicked them out less than an hour ago. The anonymous call was their retaliation because I ruined their plan to frame me as unfit."
Margaret Cho closed the phone and looked at me, her demeanor completely softened. "Ms. Vance, this is one of the most malicious setups I have ever witnessed. Where is Lily now?"
"Sleeping in her room. She’s terrified."
"May I see her? Just to verify she is physically unharmed?"

I nodded and led them to the bedroom. Lily was still asleep, clutching her favorite stuffed fox. The caseworker checked her breathing, gently patted her head, and then quietly closed the door.
"We are opening an immediate investigation," Ms. Cho said once we were back in the living room. "But more importantly, you need a restraining order. If what you're saying about the trust fund is true, they won't stop here."
