Chapter 3 - The Truth Behind the Call

Officer Daniels made it clear to Evelyn and Melissa that if they did not leave voluntarily, they would be escorted off the property in handcuffs for criminal trespassing. Muttering curses and throwing venomous looks at me, the two gathered their purses and hurried out to Melissa’s sedan.

Once the police finished taking my statement, provided the incident report number, and departed, the house fell into a heavy stillness.

I spent the rest of the evening comforting Lily. We ordered her favorite pasta, cuddled on the sofa, and opened the stuffed fox from Denver. Slowly, the faint glow of joy returned to her brown eyes. After putting her to bed and waiting until her breathing turned slow and deep, I walked down to my home office.

I opened my laptop and began my investigation.

My mother and sister had been pushing to "help" me ever since my husband passed away two years ago. At first, I thought it was family solidarity. But over the last six months, Evelyn had been dropping hints that I was "unstable" and "working too hard to be a good mother."

Why call 911 over a five-year-old? Why try to create an official police record alleging that Lily was out of control?

I logged into my bank accounts. Everything looked normal. Then I logged into the home management cloud portal for my security cameras.

My heart hammered against my ribs as I opened the cloud archives.
