Chapter 2 - Paper Trails and Hidden Secrets

Officer Daniels nodded slowly, taking in the ice in my voice. He began typing notes into his handheld tablet while his partner stepped outside to speak with his sergeant. Evelyn’s smirk faltered slightly, but she quickly crossed her arms, trying to reclaim her dominant posture.
“You are making a huge mistake, Natalie,” Evelyn spat, her voice tight. “We were doing you a favor by staying here while you flew around Denver playing corporate executive. You should be thanking us!”
“I paid you two thousand dollars to watch Lily for four days,” I said quietly, never letting go of my daughter, who was still trembling in my arms. “I gave you grocery money. I gave you my home. And I come back to find my daughter terrified by armed officers.”
Melissa stepped forward, waving her phone. “She was throwing a tantrum, Natalie! She wouldn't eat her lunch and tried to lock herself in the bedroom!”
“Because Grandma slapped me!” Lily sobbed, her little voice breaking through the room. She pressed her face back into my neck. “She hit my face because I asked for Daddy’s stuffed fox!”
The room went dead silent.
Officer Daniels’ fingers paused over his tablet. His jaw tightened. He turned his eyes slowly toward my mother. “Ma’am, did you strike the child?”
“Of course not!” Evelyn snapped, her face flushing a deep crimson. “The brat is lying! Children lie all the time!”
“I don’t lie!” Lily cried softly.
I looked up at Evelyn and Melissa. My mind wasn't clouded by rage; it was crystallized into pure, laser-focused clarity. I realized then that this was never about discipline. There was something else happening in my home.
“Officers,” I said, rising to my feet while holding Lily securely. “I want to press charges for child endangerment, filing a false police report, and domestic trespass. I want them removed from my property immediately.”

“You can’t kick us out!” Melissa yelled. “We live here!”
“No, you don’t,” I replied coldly. “You were paid babysitters. And your shift is officially over.”
