Chapter 8 - Justice in the Courtroom
Six months later, the trial of Arthur and Margaret Vance commenced. Because of the overwhelming digital and physical evidence uncovered by Detective Miller and Aaron, there was very little room for a defense.
Daniel and I sat in the front row of the courtroom, holding hands tightly. Margaret sat at the defense table, looking significantly older, her hair unkempt, the arrogant sparkle in her eyes replaced by a bitter, hollow stare. Arthur sat beside her, staring at the floor, already looking like a ghost of his former self.
The prosecutor played the digital audio files recovered from the cloud server, demonstrating how the microphone could pick up the slightest sounds. He showed the photos of the hidden camera embedded in the bear's left eye. Finally, he read aloud Margaret’s digital diary entries, exposing her manipulative motives to the judge and jury.
When it was time for sentencing, the judge, a stern woman with no patience for the abuse of parental trust, did not hold back.
"Arthur and Margaret Vance, your actions are a grotesque betrayal of the most sacred bond in human society—the protection of a child," the judge declared, her voice ringing clear through the courtroom. "Instead of offering love and sanctuary to your granddaughter, you used military-grade technology to invade her privacy and stalk her family from afar out of a petty, vindictive desire for control."
The judge hammered her gavel.
"Margaret Vance, I sentence you to seven years in a state penitentiary without the possibility of early parole. Arthur Vance, for your role in facilitating and manufacturing this device, I sentence you to four years."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. Margaret slumped forward, sobbing hysterically into her hands, while Arthur merely closed his eyes in resignation.
As the bailiffs led them away in chains, Daniel let out a long, shuddering breath. The heavy weight that had rested on his chest for nearly a year finally evaporated. Justice had been served, and the final chapter of their tyranny was officially closed.
