Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at Dawn

On the morning of the third day, the trap snapped shut.
The police had instructed us to stay at home, but Daniel and I couldn't just sit by the phone. We drove to a coffee shop just two blocks away from his parents' affluent suburban home, waiting for Aaron’s signal.
At exactly 6:00 AM, three unmarked police cruisers and a forensic transport van pulled up to Margaret and Arthur's pristine, manicured driveway. The morning sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, casting a cold, gray light over the neighborhood.
Aaron texted me: We are moving in. Stay put.
Inside the house, as we later learned from the police reports and bodycam footage, Margaret was sitting at her kitchen island, a cup of herbal tea in one hand and her iPad in the other. She was furiously refreshing the surveillance application, frustrated by the continuous "Signal Disconnected" error message that had plagued her screen for the past 36 hours.
"Arthur! Did you buy a cheap piece of junk?" she snapped at her husband, who was reading the morning paper. "The feed is still black. I can’t see what they’re doing! I told you we should have used a stronger transmitter!"
"Calm down, Margaret," Arthur replied dismissively. "Maybe the kid left it in the closet. We’ll just go over there this weekend for a 'surprise visit' to check on it."
Before Margaret could respond, the heavy oak front door groaned under the force of a battering ram.
BANG! BANG!
"POLICE! SEARCH WARRANT! OPEN THE DOOR IMMEDIATELY!"
Arthur jumped up, knocking his coffee over, his face draining of color. Margaret dropped her iPad, the screen cracking against the hardwood floor.
Before they could even reach the hallway, Detective Miller, Aaron, and four uniformed officers flooded the house, weapons drawn but lowered.
"Arthur and Margaret Vance," Detective Miller announced, her voice echoing like thunder in the quiet house. "We have a federal warrant to search these premises and seize all electronic devices."
"What is the meaning of this?!" Margaret shrieked, her voice reaching a hysterical pitch. "This is an outrage! We are respectable citizens! Get out of my house!"

"Sit down, ma'am," Aaron said, his voice cold as ice as he stepped forward. He looked at his brother-in-law's mother with absolute disgust. "We found the bear, Margaret. We found the camera. And we found the server logs."
Margaret’s mouth flew open, but no sound came out. She staggered backward, collapsing into a dining chair, her eyes darting frantically around the room as the reality of her downfall collapsed upon her.
