The social fallout for Arthur and Margaret was total and immediate. Their wealthy friends abandoned them, their country club memberships were revoked, and Arthur was forced into a shameful, hasty retirement from his corporate law firm.
For Daniel, the emotional toll was immense. He spent hours in therapy, processing the realization that the people who raised him were capable of such deep psychological malice. I held him through the dark nights when he cried, mourning the family he wished he had, while celebrating the strength of the family we were building together.
Surprisingly, Lily adjusted beautifully. Because we acted so quickly, she never actually knew what the bear was capable of. To her, it was just a broken toy that Uncle Aaron took away.
One afternoon, about a month after the incident, Lily was playing in the backyard, chasing butterflies through the grass. Daniel and I sat on the porch, watching her laugh.
"I kept thinking about what would have happened if she hadn't frozen," Daniel whispered, wrapping his arm around my waist. "If she hadn't felt that something was wrong with that toy, we might still be living under their gaze."
