Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

By the second day, Detective Miller had uncovered a digital paper trail that painted a terrifying picture of obsession and control. She called Daniel and me into the precinct while Aaron watched Lily at our house under the guise of an uncle-daughter arcade day.

We sat in a small, sterile interrogation room, though we were the victims, not the suspects. Miller laid out several printed documents on the metal table.

"We obtained an expedited warrant for your in-laws' digital records based on the active transmission from the toy," Miller began, her expression grim. "What we found goes far beyond a grandmother being overly attached."

She pointed to a bank statement. "Three weeks ago, Arthur purchased this specific modification kit from an dark-web vendor operating out of Eastern Europe. It’s a military-grade surveillance package disguised as commercial toy components. It includes a high-sensitivity microphone capable of picking up whispers through walls, a 4K pinhole lens, and a battery bypass system that draws power from standard alkaline batteries but stores an emergency charge in a hidden lithium-ion cell."

Daniel buried his face in his hands. "Why would they do this? Why go to such extreme lengths?"

"Look at the login logs," Miller said, sliding another paper forward. "We managed to pull the access history for the cloud server. The application was opened on Margaret’s tablet over forty times in the span of twelve hours after the package was delivered to your porch. She wasn't just checking in. She was waiting, staring at a blank, dark screen inside that cardboard box, waiting for your daughter to open it."

"It's sick," I whispered, tears of anger finally stinging my eyes. "It’s a complete violation of our home, our privacy, and our child."

"It is a felony," Miller corrected firmly. "Specifically, interception of wire communications, manufacturing and possession of wiretapping equipment, and stalking a minor. But here is the catch: to make these charges stick seamlessly in court without their high-priced lawyers wriggling out of it, we need to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were the ones who modified the bear and sent it, not a third-party seller or a malicious prankster."

"How do we do that?" Daniel asked, looking up, his eyes bloodshot.

"We need the shipping receipt and the leftover modification materials," Miller said. "We are executing a search warrant on their residence tomorrow morning. But until then, we need to ensure they don't suspect a thing. If they realize the police are coming, they could dump their devices into a bucket of bleach."

"We'll keep pretending," I said, squeezing Daniel's trembling hand. "Whatever it takes to put them away."
