Chapter 9 - New Beginnings

Two years later.
Adrian was serving a twenty-year sentence in a maximum-security federal prison. Without his wealth, his charm, or his tailored suits, he was just a number. Vanessa, having alienated everyone with her toxic greed, had been caught trying to run a petty scam in Las Vegas and was dealing with her own legal nightmares.
I didn't care to follow their stories anymore. My own story was just getting to the good part.
Under my leadership, the Sterling Conglomerate had expanded its philanthropic wing tenfold. I was featured on the cover of Forbes and Time, not just as an heiress, but as a visionary leader who had reshaped corporate responsibility.
But my greatest joy wasn't in the boardrooms. It was at home.
Julian and I stood on the balcony of our new penthouse overlooking the city skyline. The wind whipped through my hair as I leaned back against his chest. His arms wrapped around me tightly, secure and warm.
"I was at the site today," Julian murmured, resting his chin on my shoulder. "The new domestic violence shelter is finished. The 'Elara House'. It opens next week."
I smiled, tears pricking the corners of my eyes. "Thank you for designing it, Julian. It means the world to me."
He turned me around, his eyes locking onto mine. "You mean the world to me."
He dropped to one knee, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket. It wasn't an absurdly massive, ostentatious diamond like the one Adrian had bought to show off. It was a flawless, elegant, vintage-cut sapphire—a stone of depth, truth, and resilience.
"Elara Sterling," he said softly, his voice full of emotion. "You are the strongest, most incredible woman I have ever known. Will you do me the honor of being my wife?"
May you like
I didn't hesitate. I didn't second-guess.
"Yes," I breathed, pulling him up for a kiss.
