Chapter 5 - The Mistress’s True Colors

A week later, I was discharged from the hospital, my back covered in pristine white bandages, my heart hardening into diamonds.
My security team kept me updated on Adrian's whereabouts. Having been evicted from the estate and locked out of all luxury hotels, he and Vanessa had retreated to a dingy, two-star motel on the outskirts of the city.
It was there that the final illusions of his life shattered.
Through a private investigator's audio feed, I listened to their downfall.
"What do you mean, you can't pay for room service?" Vanessa’s voice was shrill, echoing off thin motel walls. "Adrian, I am pregnant with the heir to your company! You need to fix this!"
"There is no company, Vanessa!" Adrian roared, the sound of glass shattering accompanying his voice. "It’s gone! She took everything! Elara was a Sterling!"
"Then grovel!" she screamed back. "Go on your knees and beg her! I didn't sign up to live in a roach motel! I left a perfectly good sugar daddy for you because you promised me billions!"
A heavy silence fell over the recording.
"What did you say?" Adrian’s voice was dangerously low.
"You heard me," Vanessa scoffed. "You think I actually love you? You’re arrogant, selfish, and now, you're broke. And by the way... the baby isn't yours. It's Marcus's."
"My CFO?" Adrian’s voice cracked. The ultimate betrayal. The man who had been by his side for years, and the woman he had destroyed his marriage for, had been playing him all along.

"He actually has money left," Vanessa spat. "Don't bother calling me."
The sound of a door slamming shut echoed through the speaker. I turned off the feed, feeling no pity, only a cold, quiet satisfaction. Adrian had traded a diamond for a piece of broken glass, and now he was bleeding from the cuts.
