Chapter 3 - The Sterling Legacy Revealed

They didn't knock. Twelve men in immaculate black tactical suits flooded into the foyer, moving with frightening precision. They bypassed Adrian entirely, forming a protective perimeter around me.
Behind them walked a man in a bespoke charcoal suit. He was in his late sixties, with silver hair, piercing ice-blue eyes, and a presence that sucked the oxygen out of the room.
Arthur Sterling. The ghost billionaire. The man who owned the banks that owned the banks.
"Dad," I breathed, my voice finally cracking.
My father’s eyes locked onto me, taking in my torn dress, my bruised face, and the blood pooling at my feet. The temperature in the room seemed to drop below freezing. He didn't yell. He didn't rage. That wasn't how a Sterling destroyed a man.
He took off his custom suit jacket and gently draped it over my bleeding shoulders, his hands shaking just slightly with restrained fury.
"My beautiful girl," he murmured, kissing my forehead. He then slowly turned to face Adrian.
Adrian was hyperventilating, his eyes darting from my father to the security team, then finally to me. The math was finally doing itself in his head. Elara. Elara Sterling.
"Mr. Sterling," Adrian choked out, taking a step backward. "Sir, I... there is a misunderstanding. She... my wife..."
"Your wife," my father said, his voice terrifyingly calm, "is the sole heiress to the Sterling Empire. And you, Mr. Vale, are a dead man walking."
"No!" Vanessa shrieked, suddenly stepping forward. "She’s a nobody! She’s just a gold digger! Adrian, tell them!"
My father didn't even look at her. He snapped his fingers. One of his men stepped forward with a tablet.
"Adrian Vale," my father read, his voice echoing in the dead silence. "CEO of Vale Innovations. Net worth: one point two billion. Supposedly." He tapped the screen. "As of two minutes ago, I have recalled every shadow loan my subsidiaries floated you. I have triggered the moral turpitude clauses in your venture capital contracts. Your stocks are in freefall. Your personal bank accounts are frozen pending a federal investigation into embezzlement—an investigation I initiated five minutes ago."
Adrian fell to his knees. The same marble floor I had just bled on.
"Elara," Adrian begged, tears streaming down his face, his silver tongue finally failing him. "Elara, please. I didn't know. I love you! I was just angry, she made me do it!" He pointed a shaking finger at Vanessa.
I looked down at the man I had served for three years. The man who had just whipped me twenty times.

"I don't know you," I said coldly.
My father’s men escorted me out into the cool night air toward a waiting fleet of black SUVs, leaving Adrian screaming my name in the dark.
