Chapter 9 - Facing the Consequences

On the day the divorce was finalized, I walked out of the courthouse into the crisp afternoon sunshine.

Arthur walked beside me, carrying the final decree. I held absolute sole custody of Emma, complete forfeiture of any spousal claims by Daniel, full restitution judgments against his family, and a permanent protective order ensuring they could never come near us again.

Daniel was led away in handcuffs to begin serving his sentence, his eyes filled with bitter regret as he caught one last glance of me standing strong, radiant, and completely unbothered in the sunlight.

Olivia sat on a park bench outside the court, clutching a worn handbag, looking twenty years older than she had on that night of seafood and laughter. She looked at me with a mixture of terror and shame, knowing that not a single dollar of my fortune would ever touch her hands again.

I didn't feel anger toward them anymore. I felt nothing at all for them—only an overwhelming sense of peace and relief.
