Chapter 5 - The Legal Battleground
The preliminary hearing took place three weeks later in a packed courtroom.
Daniel had hired a budget divorce lawyer who attempted to paint me as an unfeeling, career-obsessed mother who abandoned her husband and family over a minor domestic dispute. They demanded temporary alimony of $20,000 a month, full restoration of credit privileges, and shared physical custody of Emma.
When it was Arthur’s turn to present our case, the atmosphere in the room shifted entirely.
Arthur did not merely rely on arguments; he presented indisputable evidence. He projected high-definition security footage from the apartment’s internal cameras onto the courtroom monitors.
The judge watched in stony silence as the video played: Olivia snatching a plate of hot food away from Emma; Ashley laughing as she ushered Emma out onto the cold balcony; Daniel standing by, pouring another glass of thousand-dollar wine without giving his crying daughter a single glance; and finally, the timestamped footage of Emma pressing her face against the cold glass door for forty-five minutes.
Next came the financial audit. Arthur submitted a three-hundred-page forensic accounting report detailing how over $1.2 million of my income over four years had been systematically siphoned by Daniel and distributed to his relatives—including unauthorized transfers to fund Ashley’s failed boutique business and payoff Olivia’s private gambling debts.
The judge turned her gaze upon Daniel and his legal team. The silence was deafening.
"Mr. Miller," the judge said, her voice dripping with disdain. "You are requesting spousal support from a woman whose child you allowed to be locked outside in freezing conditions?"

"Motion for temporary support is denied in its entirety," the judge ruled firmly. "Temporary sole legal and physical custody of Emma Miller is awarded exclusively to the mother. Mr. Miller is granted supervised visitation only, contingent upon a full psychological evaluation and completion of parenting courses, at his own expense."
