Chapter 4 - Eviction and Exposure

The scene on the sidewalk outside the residential tower was witnessed by half the neighborhood.

Olivia, who spent years posturing as an aristocrat living off her "successful son," was forced to pack her belongings into trash bags because the designer luggage in the closet was purchased on my card and remained impounded under the court order. Ashley was sobbing uncontrollably on the curb, trying repeatedly to call friends for a ride, only to find her cell phone service cut off because the family account was registered under my corporate profile.

Daniel stood on the curb, surrounded by three suitcases, staring up at the penthouse balcony where he had spent four years living like a king on my salary.

He tried to approach me as I stepped out of a black town car with Arthur.

"Sarah, please," he begged, his bravado entirely collapsed. "We can talk about this. I didn't know they put Emma outside! I was distracted! I love you, Sarah!"

"Distracted?" I stopped, looking at him with absolute clarity. "You looked me in the eye and told me not to cause a scene. You told me your mother knew how to raise kids while my daughter was shivering in the dark."

"It was a mistake!" he cried out. "My mother is set in her ways! I'll tell her to leave! We'll go to counseling!"

"The time for counseling was when you let your family leech off my life's work while mistreating my child," I said quietly. "You never loved me, Daniel. You loved the lifestyle I provided."
