Chapter 7 - The Trap Springs Shut

Patricia’s face drained of color. "What?"
Before Patricia could react, the heavy wooden doors of the executive suite were smashed open with a deafening boom.
"FBI! Don't move!"
Half a dozen armed federal agents flooded into the room, tactical gear gleaming under the chandeliers, weapons trained directly on Patricia Whitaker. Behind them walked Mark Vance, along with lead Special Agent Marcus Vance (no relation), holding a federal warrant.
"Patricia Whitaker," Agent Marcus announced loudly. "You are under arrest for extortion, grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy, and unlawful restraint."
"This is an outrage!" Patricia shrieked, backing against the window, her composure completely shattering. "Do you know who I am? I am the chairwoman of Whitaker & Associates! My lawyers will have your badges for this! Lauren, you treacherous little bitch!"
Patricia lunged toward Lauren, but two federal agents tackled her to the carpeted floor, swiftly pulling her arms behind her back and snapping steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
"Lauren Whitaker," Patricia screamed, her face pressed against the rug, her diamond necklace tangled in her hair. "You ruined this family! You ruined everything!"
"No, Patricia," Lauren said softly, standing over her defeated mother-in-law with quiet dignity. "You ruined yourself the moment you mistook a mother's love for weakness."
As the agents hauled Patricia to her feet and led her out of the suite in handcuffs, another door opened down the hallway.
Carter walked into the room, supported by Chloe. He looked at his mother in her handcuffs. For a moment, Patricia froze, staring at her son—the son she thought was trapped in a dark closet, broke and broken.
"Carter?" Patricia gasped, her voice trembling with genuine shock. "How... how are you here?"
Carter looked at his mother not with anger, but with deep, pitying sorrow.
"Goodbye, Mother," Carter said softly.
Patricia was led away into the elevator, surrounded by press cameras that had already gathered outside the hotel after receiving leaks about the dramatic arrest of one of San Diego’s prominent socialites.
Lauren turned to Carter and wrapped her arms around his waist. Carter held her tightly, resting his chin on top of her head as tears of overwhelming relief washed over both of them.
"It’s over," Lauren whispered. "It’s finally over."
"Not quite," Vance said, walking up to them with a smile and handing Carter a file. "The FBI has already seized Patricia’s private accounts. They’ve recovered over thirty million dollars of the stolen funds. The rest will be covered by corporate indemnity insurance. Carter, your name is completely cleared. The federal prosecutors are filing charges against Patricia and her accomplices tonight."
"And the firm?" Carter asked softly.
"The board of directors is holding an emergency session tomorrow," Vance replied. "They’ve already reached out. They want you to take over as CEO to rebuild the company’s reputation."

Carter looked at Lauren, then down at his hands—hands that had trembled in the dark for fifty agonizing days. He shook his head slowly.
"No," Carter said, looking into Lauren’s eyes with absolute clarity. "I don't want the firm. I don't care about corporate titles or high-society galas anymore. All I care about is my family."
