Chapter 6 - Confrontation at the Gala

The Grand Del Mar resort was illuminated with crystal chandeliers, elegant floral arrangements, and hundreds of high-society guests dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and champagne, completely masking the toxic deception lurking beneath the surface.

In a private executive suite on the third floor, overlooking the opulent courtyard, Patricia Whitaker stood near the window, sipping Pinot Noir. She wore a striking emerald green silk gown and diamond necklace, looking every bit the ruthless matriarch of the Whitaker family empire.

A knock sounded at the suite door.

Patricia checked her gold watch, smiled cruelly, and opened the door.

Lauren stood in the hallway. She wore a simple dark dress, her makeup intentionally light to make her look tired and distressed. She clutched a leather handbag tightly against her stomach.

"Lauren," Patricia said smoothly, stepping aside to let her in. "I’m surprised you took my call. You looked terrible the last time we spoke."

"Where is he, Patricia?" Lauren demanded, her voice shaking with controlled emotion as she stepped into the suite.

Patricia closed the door behind them and locked it with a quiet clack. "I don't know what you're talking about, my dear. Carter is in Chicago... or perhaps he’s fled the country entirely. The federal authorities called me this morning. Did you know your husband has been stealing millions from company accounts?"

"Stop lying!" Lauren cried out, taking a step toward her mother-in-law. "I know he isn't in Chicago! I found the button from your coat in my closet! I know you’ve been coming into my home!"

Patricia’s smile faded, replaced by a cold, sharp sneer. She set her wine glass down on the marble table.

"You always were smarter than Carter gave you credit for," Patricia said calmly, walking toward her. "So what if I visited? It’s my house. My family’s money bought that suburban box you live in."

"You locked your own son in a secret room behind a closet for two months!" Lauren shouted, tears welling in her eyes—half real, half calculated performance. "You starved him! You psychologically tortured him! How could a mother do that to her own child?"

Patricia laughed—a harsh, barking laugh that echoed off the high ceilings.

"Mother? Carter is weak! Just like his father was!" Patricia spat out, her eyes blazing with malice. "He lacked the stomach to do what was necessary to preserve this family’s legacy! When I lost that money in offshore ventures, I needed a fall guy. Who better than my pathetic son who keeps detailed ledgers of every dime?"

Hidden inside Lauren’s lapel, a button-sized HD camera captured every word, transmitting the audio and video live to Vance and a team of FBI financial crimes agents parked in a surveillance van downstairs.

"You blackmailed him," Lauren pressed, backing away slightly toward the middle of the room. "You threatened to put me in prison and take Harper away from us if he didn't pretend to be a fugitive!"

"Of course I did!" Patricia snapped, stepping closer and poking a sharp, manicured finger into Lauren’s chest. "And it worked brilliantly! Carter sat in that cramped little box like a good little dog for fifty days, eating canned food and keeping his mouth shut because he was terrified I’d destroy you. And now, tonight, I announce his default from the company. The FBI will seize his assets, the insurance will cover my losses, and you... you will be left with nothing."

"You're a monster," Lauren whispered.

"I am a businesswoman," Patricia corrected coldly. "And right now, you are going to sign these papers."

Patricia walked over to the desk and pulled out a stack of legal documents. "This is a full relinquishment of Carter’s trust rights and a surrender of Harper’s guardianship to me in the event of Carter’s arrest. You sign this, and I give you five hundred thousand dollars cash to pack your bags and leave California forever."

Lauren looked down at the documents, then up into Patricia’s icy eyes.

"And what if I refuse?" Lauren asked softly.

Patricia smiled monstrously. "Then tomorrow morning, the FBI receives a flash drive containing forged emails showing you helped Carter move ten million dollars into a Swiss account. You’ll be in handcuffs before lunch, Lauren. And Harper will be placed in a group home until I petition the court for her custody. You choose."

Lauren took a deep breath. She reached into her handbag, pulled out a small electronic device, and pressed a red button.

"I choose option three," Lauren said calmly.

May you like

"Option three?" Patricia frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"Option three," Lauren repeated, her voice steady and devoid of fear, "is where you realize you’ve been talking to a wire for the last ten minutes."
