Chapter 5 - The Frame Job Unravels

Within hours, Vance’s team had transformed Chloe’s home into a command center. Carter was brought there secretly under the cover of night, wrapped in heavy blankets and wearing dark sunglasses to protect his sensitive eyes from light. After a hot shower, a warm meal, and a tearful reunion with Harper—who squeezed her daddy’s neck and promised never to play hide-and-seek again—Carter began to regain his strength and clarity.
A physician hired by Vance evaluated Carter, documenting his severe malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, and psychological trauma. Every physical injury was meticulously logged as evidence of abuse and coercion.
"We have enough to go to the police right now," Lauren said, holding Carter’s hand as they sat around Chloe’s dining table.
"No," Vance said, leaning over a map of the city. "If we go to the local police now, Patricia’s high-priced corporate attorneys will spin this. They’ll claim Carter is mentally unstable, that he hid voluntarily because he was guilty of embezzlement, and that he’s trying to frame his innocent mother to save himself. We need absolute, undeniable proof of her extortion and financial fraud."
"How do we get that?" Carter asked softly. His voice was stronger now, his spirit returning as he looked at his wife and daughter.
"We play along," Vance said with a grim smile. "Patricia thinks Carter is still trapped in that closet, terrified and obedient. She thinks Lauren is completely in the dark and driven desperate by loneliness. Tomorrow is the Whitaker & Associates annual charity gala at the Grand Del Mar resort. Patricia is planning to announce Carter’s 'unexplained disappearance' to the board and officially freeze his assets while declaring herself sole trustee."
"I remember," Carter nodded. "She told me that after the gala, she would arrange for me to be smuggled out of the country to South America under a false identity, leaving Lauren to take the fall for the remaining debts."
"Then that gala is where we strike," Vance declared. "Sarah has managed to clone the phone Patricia gave Carter to communicate with him. We have access to her encrypted text messages. But we need a confession on tape—a direct admission that she forced Carter into hiding under threat of framing Lauren."
"She won't confess to me," Carter said. "She’s too smart for that."
"She won't confess to you," Lauren said, her eyes shining with a sudden, fierce determination. "She’ll confess to me."
Carter looked at his wife in shock. "Lauren, no! She’s dangerous. She has men working for her—security guards, corrupt fixers—"
"She thinks I’m a weak, naive girl she can bully," Lauren cut in, her voice cold and resolute. "She’s been trying to destroy my marriage and tear my family apart for six years. It’s time Patricia Whitaker learns what happens when you mess with a mother protecting her child."
The plan was set. Lauren would arrange a private meeting with Patricia at the hotel right before the gala, pretending to be broken, panicked, and willing to sign over custody rights or financial assets in exchange for help finding Carter.
Vance and his team would equip Lauren with state-of-the-art hidden audio and video recording equipment, while federal agents—whom Vance was secretly contacting through his old law enforcement network—would be positioned nearby, ready to move in.
As the night grew late, Lauren sat on the porch with Carter, watching the stars above San Diego.

"I'm so sorry, Lauren," Carter whispered, wrapping his arm around her. "I thought I was being a hero, protecting you and Harper by agreeing to hide in that hellhole. I almost destroyed us."
Lauren leaned her head against his shoulder. "You tried to bear a burden no one should ever bear alone, Carter. But marriage isn't about hiding in the dark to save the people you love. It’s about standing in the light and fighting together."
