Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master’s Web

Vance quickly holstered his weapon and helped Lauren sit Carter up on the edge of the narrow cot. Sarah handed Carter a bottle of fresh water, which he drank greedily, his hands shaking so violently that water spilled down his ragged beard.
"Carter," Vance said sternly but gently. "I'm Mark Vance, a private investigator hired by your wife. You are safe now, but we need to know everything. Who threatened you? Who forced you into this room?"
Carter wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, his eyes darting frantically toward the open closet door as if expecting an attack at any second.
"My mother," Carter whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and profound shame. "Patricia."
Lauren gasped, clutching Carter’s hand. "Patricia? Your own mother did this to you?"
"She didn't just do it to me," Carter rasped, looking into Lauren’s eyes with overwhelming guilt. "She’s spent the last two years setting up a trap to ruin us. Lauren... Whitaker & Associates is bankrupt. My mother embezzled over forty million dollars from client trust funds and offshore investment accounts to pay off illegal gambling debts and bad real estate deals in East Asia."
Lauren’s head spun. "Forty million dollars?"
"Six months ago, the federal auditors began poking around," Carter continued, tears streaming down his hollow face. "Patricia knew the hammer was going to fall. She couldn't face prison. She couldn't bear the shame of losing her social standing. So she built a plan to frame me for the entire embezzlement."
"Frame you?" Vance asked, taking notes. "How does hiding in a closet fit into framing you?"
"Two months ago, she brought me to her estate," Carter explained, his voice cracking. "She showed me forged documents—bank accounts in my name, offshore transfers with my forged signature, fake emails between me and money launderers. She told me that if I went to the authorities, she had already arranged for evidence to be planted that would link Lauren as my accomplice. She swore she would make sure Lauren went to a federal penitentiary and Harper was sent into state foster care."
Lauren felt the air leave her lungs. "She threatened to send me to prison and take Harper?"
"Yes!" Carter sobbed. "She said if I disappeared—if I went into hiding and pretended to be on the run—she would manipulate the audit from the outside, pin all the missing millions on me, and then 'discover' that I had abandoned my family. She told me that if I hid in this room and never spoke a word to anyone, she would leave you and Harper alone and make sure you got the life insurance payout once she had me declared dead or a fugitive."
"Wait," Vance interrupted, his eyes sharp. "She forced you to hide in your own house?"
"She made me do it here so she could control me," Carter said, hanging his head. "She had keycards to the house. She came in late at night while you were asleep, Lauren. She brought me food, water, and instructions. She threatened that if I stepped out of this room during the day, or if I told you the truth, she would trigger the anonymous tip to the FBI framing you as my co-conspirator. I was so terrified for you and Harper... I thought if I suffered in silence for a few months, I could save you."
"Oh, Carter," Lauren wept, hugging his frail body tightly. "You fool... you sweet, foolish man. Why didn't you trust me? We could have fought her together!"
"I couldn't risk it, Lauren," Carter wept. "She’s a monster. But... a few nights ago, I couldn't take it anymore. I sneaked out to look at Harper while she was sleeping. I thought she was asleep... but she opened her eyes. I put my finger to my lips and ran back into the closet. I knew then that the game was over."
Vance stepped forward, his face dark with resolve. "It's not just financial fraud, Mr. Whitaker. Your mother is actively framing your wife for infidelity right now. She’s building a case to strip Lauren of her parental rights and take full control of Harper's inheritance."
Carter’s eyes widened in horror. "What?"
"She’s hired private surveillance," Vance revealed. "And she’s manipulating your entire life from the shadows. But she made one fatal mistake."
May you like
"What mistake?" Lauren asked.
Vance smiled thinly. "She didn't count on us finding Carter alive."
