Chapter 3 - Secrets Built Into the Walls

The shock threatened to crush Lauren right there in the coffee shop. Carter had never left. He hadn't been in Chicago. He had been right there, inches away from her while she slept, while she cried over missing him, while she tucked their daughter into bed.
"Why?" Lauren whispered, tears blurring her vision. "Why would he do this to us? Why would he hide in a closet for fifty days?"
"That's what we're going to find out," Vance said, standing up and grabbing his coat. "We're going back to your house. I’m calling a forensic tech colleague of mine to join us. We need to inspect that closet without anyone knowing we’re coming."
An hour later, Lauren, Vance, and a tech named Sarah arrived at the Whitaker residence. The street was quiet, framed by towering palm trees under a bright San Diego sun that felt jarringly cheerful compared to the nightmare unfolding inside.
Vance drew a concealed firearm and gestured for Lauren to stay behind him as they entered through the front door. The house was dead quiet. They moved slowly up the stairs toward the master bedroom.
"Stay near the door, Lauren," Vance instructed quietly.
Sarah pulled out an infrared thermal camera and aimed it at the walnut sliding doors of the custom closet. She adjusted the dial and gasped softly.
"What is it?" Lauren asked from the doorway, her voice trembling.
"There's a heat signature behind the back wall," Sarah whispered, showing the screen to Vance. "It’s faint, but there’s human body heat back there right now. Someone is alive inside that wall."
Vance stepped up to the closet, pulled open the walnut sliding doors, and pushed aside Carter’s long wool overcoats. He used a high-powered tactical flashlight to inspect the rear oak paneling. Near the floor, hidden behind a stack of shoe boxes, he spotted a small, keyless electronic lock keypad built flush into the wood.
"It’s a hidden door," Vance muttered. "Engineered right into the frame."
"Can you open it?" Lauren asked, stepping into the room despite her fear.
"I don't need to crack the code," Sarah said, pulling out a small bypass tool. "These residential locks are easy to trick."
Within two minutes, a soft click echoed through the room. The rear wooden panel shifted forward an inch, revealing a dark gap.
Vance drew his gun, pushed the panel open, and swept his flashlight into the dark space beyond.
Lauren braced herself for a monster, a stranger, or an unfaithful husband caught in an unfathomable lie. But what the flashlight revealed made her heart break into a thousand pieces.
It was a small, windowless hidden room built between the bedroom wall and the attic space. It was outfitted with a narrow cot, a small portable cooler, a chemical camping toilet, a stack of books, and dozens of empty water bottles.
And lying on the cot, trembling, emaciated, and pale as a ghost, was Carter.
"Carter!" Lauren screamed, pushing past Vance and dropping to her knees beside the cot.
The man on the bed looked like a shadow of her husband. He had lost at least thirty pounds. His hollow cheeks were covered in a thick, unkempt beard, his eyes were sunken and bloodshot, and he flinched violently away from the flashlight beam, shielding his face with a gaunt hand.
"Lauren... no... please, go away," Carter croaked, his voice raw and raspy as if he hadn't used his vocal cords in weeks. "You can't be here... she’ll see you..."

"Carter, what are you talking about? Who will see me?" Lauren cried, wrapping her arms around his trembling shoulders. He smelled of sweat, stale air, and deep desperation. "You’ve been living in here for two months?! Why? Why didn't you tell me?!"
"I had to protect you," Carter sobbed, burying his face in Lauren’s neck. Tears wet her shoulder. "I had to protect you and Harper. If I came out... if I didn't play along... she said she would kill you both."
