Chapter 9 - The Ghost of the Past

A few weeks before Noah’s tenth birthday, Claire had to visit a downtown banking center to finalize some business accounts. As she walked across the plaza, a man sitting on a concrete planter caught her eye.
He was wearing a faded, worn-out jacket. His hair was streaked with gray, and he looked entirely broken by life. He was eating a cheap sandwich from a paper bag.
It was Daniel.
Following the court case, Daniel had been fired from his corporate job due to the public scandal. He now worked an entry-level inventory job, living in a cramped studio apartment, with the vast majority of his income automatically transferred to Claire’s account for Noah’s medical bills.
Daniel looked up and his eyes locked onto Claire. He froze, the sandwich dropping into his lap. He stood up slowly, taking a step toward her, his lips trembling.
"Claire?" he whispered.
Claire stopped. Two years ago, seeing him might have triggered panic or rage. But now, looking at the hollow shell of the man who had betrayed her son, she felt absolutely nothing. No anger, no hatred. Just a profound, clean indifference.
"How... how is Noah?" Daniel asked, tears welling in his eyes. "I pay the bills every month. I just... I want to know if he’s okay. Please, Claire. Just tell me if he can walk."
Claire looked at him calmly. "Noah is happy. He is healthy. He is surrounded by a real family who protects him and loves him fiercely."
Daniel let out a choked sob. "Can I... can I see him? Just once? Just from a distance?"
May you like
"No," Claire said firmly, her voice devoid of cruelty, stating it simply as an unalterable fact of life. "You made your choice in that ER, Daniel. You chose a different family. And the universe held you to it. Goodbye."
She turned around and walked away, her heels clicking confidently against the pavement. Daniel sank back down onto the concrete planter, burying his face in his hands, finally realizing that some mistakes can never, ever be undone.
